Cholera cases rise in Taiz as cleaning workers continue strike to protest assassination of their director

TAIZ, Sept. 23 (YPA) – The city of Taiz, southwest Yemen, is witnessing an alarming rise in cholera cases, with 86 cases recorded in the past 48 hours.

This coincides with the ongoing strike by the cleaning workers for the fifth consecutive day. This strike is in protest against the assassination of the cleaning fund’s director, Iftahan Al-Mashhari, last Thursday.

Medical sources confirmed that the situation portends an imminent health disaster if piles of garbage continue to accumulate in the streets.

Popular demonstrations continue in front of the local government building, demanding the arrest of Al-Mashhari’s killers.

Security forces loyal to the Saudi-led coalition have failed to apprehend the suspects, amid accusations that they are being protected by powerful military figures.

Meanwhile, activists from the Islah and General People’s Congress parties are trading accusations regarding the assassination, adding political complexity to the worsening health and humanitarian crisis.
