TAIZ, Sept. 20 (YPA) – Public angry protests have escalated in the coalition-held Taiz city for the third consecutive day, demanding the arrest of those responsible for the assassination of Afthan al-Mashari, the Executive Director of the Sanitation Services Fund in Taiz, last Thursday.
During the large-scale demonstration that marched through the city streets, protesters raised banners and chanted slogans expressing their anger towards the coalition-backed authorities, calling for their dismissal and removal from power due to their failure to arrest al-Mashhri’s killers.
The protesters warned that they would not tolerate their demands being ignored, threatening to escalate their protests in the coming days until justice be served and the victim’s rights be upheld.
The demonstration came as a culmination of widespread public outrage that swept through the city last Friday, coinciding with a citywide strike by sanitation workers, all in protest against the crime, which has become a major public issue.
Beside, another protest rally was staged by women in front of the Taiz police station, where they raised their voices against the deteriorating security situation following the assassination of Mashari, who was shot dead by armed members of the pro-Islah faction within the armed coalition in the city center.
Meanwhile, sanitation workers in Taiz city set up protest tents outside the local government building, announcing a general strike until those involved in Mashari’s assassination be arrested, amid growing public outrage over the incident.
The protesters held the coalition’s funded security forces fully responsible for their failure to apprehend the perpetrators, affiliated with leaders of the Islah Party.
Over the past two days, the streets of Taiz have turned into piles of garbage and debris as sanitation workers continued their total strike until the arrest of the perpetrators of Mashari’s murder.
