200 media outlets to halt broadcasts in global protest over killing of journalists in Gaza

PARIS, Aug. 31 (YPA) – Reporters Without Borders (RSF), in cooperation with the Avaaz platform, will launch an unprecedented global media campaign tomorrow, Monday, to protest the killing of Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip by the Israeli occupation.

In a global first, nearly 200 media outlets from 50 countries will simultaneously disrupt their front pages, homepages, and radio programs. The campaign aims to demand an end to the killing of journalists in Gaza and call for international press access to the Strip.

For the first time in modern history, newsrooms across all continents will coordinate this large-scale editorial protest.

The protest, which is also coordinated by the International Federation of Journalists, will feature printed newspapers publishing blacked-out front pages bearing a stark message. Broadcast and radio stations will temporarily suspend their programs with a joint statement, while online media will block their homepages or banners in solidarity. Editors, correspondents, and other journalists are also participating.

This action comes as the number of journalists martyred in Gaza has risen to over 210 since October 7, 2023, making it the deadliest conflict for journalists in modern history.

According to the Government Media Office in Gaza, the total number of killed journalists has reached 245 since the beginning of the “genocide war” on the Gaza Strip, following the crime committed by the Israeli occupation in bombing the Nasser Medical Complex in the city of Khan Yunis.
