Mukalla witnesses popular uprising in protest against poor services

MUKALLA, June 15 (YPA) – The city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout province in eastern Yemen, known for its oil resources, and the coastal districts are experiencing total darkness due to frequent power outages lasting up to 10 hours a day.

On Sunday evening, groups of young people and citizens took to the streets of the city to express their dissatisfaction with the power outage crisis and the deterioration of basic services, especially amidst the intense heat wave that has exacerbated the suffering of the population.

The protesters blocked several main roads in various neighborhoods of Mukalla, including the old port road, using burning tires to express their anger at the deteriorating living conditions and the failure of the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition to provide the necessary fuel for power plants.

These protests come amid the deterioration in living conditions resulting from the ongoing collapse of the local currency, which has led to its loss of value against foreign currencies and an unprecedented rise in the prices of basic food commodities. All of this is occurring without any effective economic action or solutions from the government.

In a related context, Saudi Arabia had summoned Hadramout Governor Mabkhot bin Madi in March amid reports that he had been placed under house arrest following his approval of the deployment of approximately 2,500 armed UAE-backed fighters to the city of Mukalla.
