Guterres calls for an independent investigation into killing of Palestinians during distribution of aid in Gaza
SANAA, June 02 (YPA) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep shock at the dozens of Palestinian casualties while trying to obtain food aid in the Gaza Strip, calling for an immediate and independent investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.
Guterres said in a statement issued on Monday evening: “I am horrified by reports of Palestinians being killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza. It is unacceptable that Palestinians are forced to risk their lives to obtain food,” stressing the need for a transparent and independent investigation into these tragic events.
The Palestinian Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip had previously announced that at least 31 Palestinians were killed by Israeli occupation forces’ fire while gathering near a food aid distribution center.
This escalation comes at a time when Gaza is suffering from a worsening humanitarian crisis due to the ongoing Israeli blockade and aggression, amid growing international warnings of the risk of famine in the stricken Strip.
