SANAA, May 10 (YPA) – Belgium’s ruling party announced that it will join French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiative and will soon recognize Palestine.
“The suffering of the people of Gaza must end,” Belgian Prime Minister, Bart De Wever, said, according to Politico newspaper.
An official announcement said that the party has supported the two-state solution for years and is now expected to promote a government discussion of a proposal to recognize Palestinian sovereignty.
Party leader Valerie Van Peel explained: “This issue will soon be on the government table.”
According to the report, this represents a sharp shift in Belgium’s position, which previously announced that it would only recognize a Palestinian state if this step would contribute to advancing the peace process with Israel.
In Europe, Ireland and Spain publicly support recognition of a Palestinian state.
