WORLD, Feb. 11 (YPA) -In response to President Donald Trump’s continued musings about the US acquiring Greenland from Denmark, Danish citizens have launched their own effort to purchase America’s most economically prosperous state —California.
The campaign, called Denmarkification, seeks to raise funds to “buy” California from the US and turn it into Danish territory. According to the campaign website, the cost would be $1 trillion and “a lifetime supply of Danish pastries, which Hollywood will pay for.”
Xavier Dutoit, the campaign’s initiator, told Politico that raising this amount could be possible through crowdfunding, with the equivalent of just 200,000 kroner from each Dane.
The Denmarkification website suggests that President Trump might agree to the deal, as he has often criticized California, calling it one of the most “devastated” states in the country.
The campaign chose California for its warm climate, technological innovations, avocado production, and, of course, Disneyland. The website explains, “California offers everything Denmark could want in a new territory.”
Trump stated on January 7 that Greenland should become part of the US and threatened to slap high trade tariffs on Denmark if it doesn’t give up the island. He suggested during his first presidential term that the US could buy Greenland. Both Greenlandic and Danish officials dismissed the proposal.
Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous territory. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Greenland Defense Treaty, agreeing that the US will defend the island from external aggression. The island hosts a US base, Pituffik Space Base, which plays a role in the missile warning system and surveillance of the Arctic region.
