China’s population declined for first time in 60 years

WORLD, Jan. 17 (YPA) – Data from China’s State Statistics Authority indicated that China’s population declined to 1.411 billion people in 2022, by 850,000 less than the end-2021 index.

Local media report that the country’s population decline occurred for the first time in 60 years.

“China’s population by the end of 2022 reached (1, 411, 750, 000) (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and foreigners), 850,000 fewer than at the end of 2021,” the statistics authority said in its report.

The report noted that the number of births last year reached 9.56 million people, and the birth rate per thousand people was 6.77. Last year, 10.41 million citizens died, and the death rate per thousand people was 7.37.

By the end of 2022, the gender ratio was 104.69, or approximately 105 men per 100 women, the report said. The country’s male population was 722.06 million, while the female population was 689.69 million.

The working-age population (aged 16-59) at the end of the last 2-22 year was 875.56 million, or 62 percent of the total population.

The number of citizens over the age of 60 reached 280.04 million, or 19.8 percent of the total population.

“920.71 million people live in Chinese cities – 65.22 percent of the total population, and in rural areas – 491.04 million people,” according statistics.
