SANAA, Feb. 27 (YPA) – French President Emmanuel Macron has said the trial of French state-run fighters captured in Iraq and Syria should take place in countries where they face charges.
In remarks made during his participation in an event, the French president explained that his country would request the transfer of possible death sentences against the defendants in those countries to life sentences.
He stressed that his country will not return “ISIS terrorists” from Syria and Iraq to the French land, noting that Paris has always maintained its view on the subject.
On Monday, Iraqi President Barham Salih said during a joint press conference with President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris that “13 French terrorists from ISIS have been extradited to Iraq and will be prosecuted there.”
Ten days ago, US president Donald Trump called on his European allies to accept and prosecute more than 800 European fighters from the State organization, otherwise, they will be released after the US military exits from Syria.
Some European countries refuse to restore their citizens for fear of “spreading an extremist ideology or possibly carrying out attacks in the country.”
