SANAA, Feb. 2 (YPA) – Muslim Congresswoman, Elhan Omar, has joined calls for the release of Bahrain’s opposition leader, Sheikh Ali Salman, ecretary-General of the Al-Wefaq political society, which has recently upheld his life sentence.
“Freedom of expression and organization are essential elements of any democratic society,” said Omar, through her account on Twitter, adding, “Ali Salman is being punished for being a member of the political opposition.”
Omar was officially elected on November 6, 2018, becoming the first Somali-American to be elected in Congress alongside Rachida Tlaib.
Omar is one of the first Muslim women to be elected. She is also the first refugee to be elected to the US House of Representatives, as well as being the first non-white woman to represent Minnesota in the House of Representatives.
