Uruguay closes its office in Al Quds in solidarity with Gaza

MONTEVIDEO, Aug. 17 (YPA) – The Uruguayan government has decided to suspend the implementation of the cooperation agreement, signed in December 2024, between the National Agency for Research and Innovation and the Hebrew University of Al Quds, as well as to close its innovation office there.

Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin explained that the decision came as a result of developments in the Middle East and the aggression in Gaza.

Uruguay strongly condemned the Israeli decision to occupy Gaza City, describing it as a “gross violation” of international law that undermines progress toward a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

From its part, the Israeli embassy in Uruguay expressed its regret over the government’s decision, saying, “Hiding potential political differences at the expense of scientific cooperation is deplorable”.

The Uruguayan government’s decision came against the backdrop of the War Cabinet’s decision about a week and a half ago to take full control of the Gaza Strip, and the famine war being waged by the occupation forces in Gaza.
