Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan dies at age of 80

SANAA, Aug. 18 (YPA) – The former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, died on Saturday at the age of 80 years after a short period of illness, according to the institution, which bears his name.

Annan was a diplomat who contributed to strengthening the United Nations presence on the international scene during his two terms from 1997 to 2006.

Kofi Annan is a Ghanaian, and he was the first secretary general of the UN organization from Africa. He led the United Nations during the period of the Iraq war, which was characterized by great turmoil. But his performance was marred by accusations of corruption in the oil-for-food case.
