Two minor earthquakes strike Yemen’s Dhamar, Ibb governorates
DHAMAR, Aug. 20 (YPA) – The Seismological and Volcanological Observatory Center in Dhamar reported two minor earthquakes striking parts of Dhamar and Ibb governorates on Thursday.
Eng. Mohammed Hussein Mutahar Al-Houthi, head of the center, stated that seismic monitoring stations recorded the first tremor at a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale at 5:52 a.m. The epicenter was located 10 kilometers northwest of Ma’bar, the administrative center of Jahran District in Dhamar Governorate.
Technical analyses indicated that the first tremor struck at a depth of 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, according to official outlet “26 September Net.”
Al-Houthi added that monitoring stations recorded a second tremor in Al-Qafr District, Ibb Governorate, at 9:30 a.m. It measured 2.0 in magnitude at a depth of 3 kilometers.
The tremors are classified as minor and natural seismic activity that occurs periodically within the context of tectonic plate movements in the region, according to the center’s head.
