Aden faces deepening humanitarian crisis as power collapse, scorching heat trigger surge in child illnesses
ADEN, June 03 (YPA) – A worsening humanitarian and public health crisis is gripping the southern Yemeni city of Aden, driven by record-high temperatures, soaring humidity, and the near-total collapse of the local power grid, medical sources and residents said.
Prolonged power outages have left millions without adequate cooling or ventilation, exacerbating the suffering of the population, with children bearing the brunt of the crisis.
Surge in Pediatric Skin Diseases
Local medical sources reported a significant spike in acute skin infections among children over recent weeks. The surge is directly linked to the stifling conditions inside homes during extended blackouts.
According to healthcare officials, clinics and medical centers in Aden are receiving dozens of cases daily. Diagnoses include:
- Severe heat rashes (miliaria)
- Boils and bacterial infections linked to excessive sweating
- Acute skin inflammation worsened by extreme heat
“Children are the most vulnerable demographic in these conditions,” a local medical source stated, noting that clinics are operating under heavy strain.
Growing Public Discontent
On social media, activists and journalists have circulated urgent appeals from families in Aden’s Crater district and other neighborhoods. Residents described deteriorating living conditions, reporting that many children spend sleepless nights suffering from severe itching and pain caused by heat-induced skin infections.
Locals have described the humanitarian situation as “catastrophic.” Many impoverished families are unable to afford alternative cooling methods, such as private generators or solar energy, compounding the health risks for both children and the elderly.
Calls for Urgent Intervention
The developments come amid mounting public anger and widespread demands for the authorities to implement emergency measures to address the chronic electricity crisis.
Political observers and civil society groups warn that the power failure has escalated from a service deficit into a direct threat to public health and human life, particularly as the summer season intensifies and heatwaves peak.
