NEW YORK, April 07 (YPA) – The UN Security Council failed on Tuesday to adopt a draft resolution submitted by Bahrain (on behalf of Gulf states and Jordan) to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, following a veto by Russia and China.
Despite receiving 11 votes in favor, the Russian-Chinese stance proved decisive. The Russian envoy described the draft as “dangerous and unbalanced” for ignoring US-Israeli attacks on Iran and blaming Tehran for the tension.
Similarly, the Chinese envoy maintained that the root cause of the maritime disruption is the “illegal war” against Iran.
In an initial official reaction, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani expressed the “regret” of Gulf states over the rejection of the resolution, which is viewed as a diplomatic setback occurring while Manama holds the current Council presidency.
