LONDON, March 06 (YPA) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that the United Kingdom will send four additional “Typhoon” fighter jets to Qatar and deploy helicopters to Cyprus to counter potential missile threats from Iran.
Speaking at a press conference, Starmer said the move is part of efforts to strengthen the British defense presence in the region. He noted that “Wildcat” helicopters, equipped with anti-drone capabilities, are scheduled to arrive in Cyprus tomorrow, and that the frigate HMS Dragon will be deployed to the Mediterranean.
Starmer added that Britain has granted the United States access to British bases for defensive operations, stating: “We will maintain this protective shield to safeguard the British people in the region and our allies.”
He emphasized that the government is working daily to reinforce this defense posture and assist in evacuating British citizens from the area, noting that over 140,000 people have so far registered with the British authorities.
While Starmer did not rule out the possibility of Britain participating in offensive operations against Iran, he warned that the conflict could be prolonged. He also stressed the need to accelerate increases in defense spending.
