GENEVA, March. 03 (YPA) – The United Nations (UN) human rights office on Tuesday urged what it called the forces behind a deadly attack on a girls’ school in Iran, which resulted in a large number of casualties, to investigate and share insights into the incident, without saying who it believed was responsible.
Office spokesperson Ravina Shamed Assani said during a press conference in Geneva: “The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for a swift, impartial, and thorough investigation into the circumstances of the attack,” noting that the responsibility for the investigation lies with the party that carried out the strike.
The office described the incident as “horrific in every sense of the word,” pointing out that the images circulating reflect the scale of the destruction and suffering caused by the ongoing conflict, according to Reuters.
The High Commissioner reiterated his call for all parties to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table, in light of escalating tensions.
It should be noted that the school was bombed last Saturday by the Israeli occupation, coinciding with the first day of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that US forces would not deliberately target a school, while Israel announced it would open an investigation into the incident.
For his part, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, raised the issue in a letter to the High Commissioner in early March, describing the attack as “unjustifiable” and “criminal,” and noting that it resulted in the deaths of 150 students.
The spokesperson for the Office explained that the currently available data is insufficient to determine whether the attack constitutes a war crime, stressing the need to complete the investigations to establish the facts.
