Prisoners from Gaza released in critical health conditions amid warnings of systematic abuses

GAZA, Feb. 27 (YPA) – Israeli occupation forces released a group of Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip on Thursday evening via the Kerem Shalom crossing, handing them over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Upon arrival, the released individuals were immediately transported to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital for urgent medical evaluation. Medical teams reported that the detainees exhibited signs of extreme exhaustion, severe malnutrition, and clear evidence of physical and psychological abuse.

Medical professionals confirmed that the released prisoners arrived in critical condition, suffering from the cumulative effects of systematic maltreatment and medical neglect.

The Prisoners’ Information Office stated that detainees in the “Negev” and “Ramla” prisons are subjected to rigorous punitive measures and isolation, preventing any meaningful communication with their families.

  • Detention Statistics (as of February 2026):
    • 1,249 Gaza detainees are currently classified by Israeli authorities as “unlawful combatants.”
    • This figure excludes thousands held in military camps outside official records.
    • The total number of Palestinian prisoners exceeds 9,300, including 350 children and 56 women.

International and human rights concerns are escalating regarding the deteriorating health care within detention centers, amid calls to halt the systematic abuse policies pursued by the Israeli occupation authorities against detainees since October 7, 2023.
