Araghchi: There is no basis for disagreement between Iran and Egypt

TEHRAN, Aug. 29 (YPA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there is “no basis for disagreement between Iran and Egypt,” adding that Tehran is ready to resume relations whenever Cairo reaches an agreement and is prepared to do so.

Speaking during a meeting with participants in the 40th International Conference on Islamic Unity, Araghchi said Tehran seeks to establish good relations with Egypt.

“We seek to expand our relations with the Islamic world based on the principle of unity, and we have extensive relations with all Islamic countries,” he said. “Whenever our friends in Egypt reach an agreement and are ready to resume relations, we will also be fully ready.”

Regarding Lebanon, the Iranian foreign minister said Tehran seeks good relations with all Lebanese groups and factions, as well as with the Lebanese government. However, he said Iran disagrees with some of the government’s policies and expressed hope that Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry would show “greater rationality.”

Araghchi stressed that Iran is working to expand its relations with the Islamic world based on the principle of unity, emphasizing that neighboring countries hold a special place for Tehran, particularly Türkiye, Pakistan and Iraq.

Relations between Cairo and Tehran have improved since 2023, after Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed Tehran’s readiness to strengthen diplomatic ties with Egypt, which in turn welcomed the restoration of relations with Iran.

Relations between the two countries became strained following the success of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, when then-Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini ordered the severance of diplomatic ties with Egypt in response to Cairo’s signing of a peace treaty with “Israel.”
