Emergency efforts launched to avert health disaster among displaced

GAZA, Feb. 17 (YPA) – The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced Saturday that it collected about 5,000 tons of solid waste in Gaza during the second half of January, aiming to curb health risks in overcrowded shelter centers.

In a press release, UNRWA said its teams conducted over 500 cleaning campaigns in and around mass shelters, aiding more than 230,000 displaced people. The agency continues providing basic services despite collapsed infrastructure.

These efforts were coincided with waste removal starting at Gaza City’s central Firas market, where Palestinian NGOs Network Director Amjad al-Shawa reported 370,000 tons of accumulated trash since the conflict began—creating a major environmental hazard.

Gaza faces a deepening crisis from disrupted hygiene and sanitation. Waste buildup fuels insects, rodents, and diseases like typhoid, cholera, viral hepatitis, and respiratory illnesses. It also causes air pollution from toxic decomposition gases and open burning.

Leachate seeping into groundwater threatens water supplies, spiking gastrointestinal issues and chronic poisoning.

Health experts warn of worsening psychological and social impacts, especially on children and the elderly.
