US-Iran MoU deadline expires without final agreement

TEHRAN, Aug. 17 (YPA) – The 60-day deadline for the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU), known as the Islamabad Memorandum, expired on Monday, August 17, 2026, without a final agreement.

The deadline expired amid uncertainty over the fate of the MoU, which was brokered by Qatar and Pakistan and brought an end to the US-Israeli war on Iran after nearly 170 days of conflict.

According to Axios, citing regional sources, mediators continue to relay messages between Washington and Tehran, but no tangible progress has been made so far.

Amid continued uncertainty over the future of the truce, Iran is holding the Strait of Hormuz as a bargaining chip in the face of US pressure, while Washington continues to impose a naval blockade on Iran and threaten to intensify pressure on its economy.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has not yet decided whether to resume negotiations with the United States.

He explained that ongoing talks with Oman are separate from the political track and focus on technical issues related to establishing new maritime routes for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
