US winter storm leaves several dead, cuts power

WORLD, Jan. 27 (YPA) –  A severe cold wave continued to sweep across much of the United States on Tuesday, driven by Winter Storm Vern, described by meteorologists as one of the most intense in decades. The storm has so far claimed at least 21 lives and left more than 800,000 homes without power.

Large areas, particularly around the Great Lakes in the northern US, recorded sharply falling temperatures, dropping below -20°C (-4°F) in many locations, with parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin experiencing temperatures below -30°C (-22°F), according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS warned that the cold wave could worsen in the coming days as a polar air mass moves south, especially across the central United States, where wind chills could reach as low as -45°C (-49°F).
