MAHRA, Jan. 04 (YPA) – Saudi aircraft launched a series of intense airstrikes earlier this evening, targeting sites belonging to the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Mahra Governorate, eastern Yemen.
Local sources reported on Sunday evening that Saudi fighter jets bombed the Al-Ghaydah Axis headquarters and several surrounding military checkpoints currently under the control of STC forces. The sources indicated that the bombardment resulted in casualties—both killed and wounded—among the UAE-backed factions.
This aerial offensive comes at a sensitive time for the strategic province. It follows intensive Emirati efforts to establish a new military foothold after losing key positions in the oil-rich Hadramout plateau. The move highlights the intensifying “shadow conflict” between the partners of the Saudi-led coalition.
While the official reasons for the strikes remain unannounced, the timing is particularly notable. The bombardment coincided with an agreement reached earlier this morning between STC factions and the local authority in Mahra, which was intended to facilitate the withdrawal of STC elements from the governorate.
According to the agreement, STC elements arriving from Yafea and Dhalea areas were to be gathered at the Al-Ghaydah Axis camp, and they were to hand over their military vehicles and equipment. In exchange, local authorities would arrange their deportation back to Aden.
This step was initially seen as a move toward de-escalation; however, the sudden Saudi airstrikes appear to have dismantled those diplomatic efforts.
