AMSTERDAM, Nov. 11 (YPA) – Dutch Foreign Minister David van Wel said that his country is still working on legislation to ban imports of products from illegal Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.
In a press statement, Van Wel explained during a visit to the Palestinian territories that this move comes in response to what he described as “the escalation of Israeli violence and the expansion of settlements, which threatens the two-state solution.”
He indicated that his country does not see the current time as appropriate for expanding sanctions against Israel, but it will not ignore actions that deepen the crisis in the West Bank.
He stated that the Netherlands is still proceeding with the ban on imports of products from Israeli settlements, despite the decision to freeze European efforts to impose broader sanctions on Israel following the ceasefire agreement in Gaza last month.
The Dutch position comes within a broader European context, as five EU countries, including Spain and Slovenia, have announced similar steps to ban trade with the Israeli settlements.
