THE HAGUE, Oct. 22 (YPA) – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is expected to issue a ruling today regarding the blockade imposed by Israel for several months on humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The ruling by the court, the highest judicial body of the United Nations, will include an assessment of the Israeli attacks targeting UN staff and facilities in Gaza.
The expected ruling is a non-binding legal advisory opinion, but it is of great international importance and will increase pressure on Israel to cooperate with the United Nations and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip.
This is the third such ruling issued by the court regarding Israel’s practices since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023.
Last July, the court ruled that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories was illegal and previously issued a ruling ordering Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent the commission of genocide in Gaza.
It should be noted that the request for this advisory opinion was submitted by the United Nations General Assembly, and the ruling will also consider the question of whether Israel is obligated to cooperate with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
