Israeli bill calls for execution of Palestinian prisoners

OCCUPIED QUDS, Sept. 28 (YPA) – The Israeli Knesset’s National Security Committee on Sunday approved a bill that seeks to impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners.

This approval is a preliminary step before the bill is presented to the Knesset plenum for its first reading vote.

The approval passed with a majority of four votes to one objection, despite the reservations raised by the committee’s legal advisor. The advisor had stressed that the vote was illegal during the Knesset recess and that the position of security and professional bodies must be heard before a decision is made on the matter.

For his part, the committee chairman, Tzvika Fogel of the “Otzma Yehudit” party, asserted his commitment to present the bill for a vote at this stage, notwithstanding the opposing legal recommendations.

In the same context, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir emphasized the importance of passing the law, noting that he rejected a request from close associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to postpone the debate, citing “unsuitable timing.”

Ben-Gvir clarified that the law is “the order of the day” to create a powerful deterrent. He further stated that, “Specifically at this time, they [referring to Hamas in Gaza] must know that if a hair falls from the head of any abductee, it will mean the issuance of a death sentence against Palestinian prisoners in jails.”
