TAIZ, Aug. 11 (YPA) – An angry popular demonstration against rising prices was staged on Monday at Mocha, a city controlled by Emirati-backed armed factions west of Taiz province.
A protest that erupted at the Mocha Junction market had devolved into violence and attacks, with participants throwing stones at shops and urging them to close until they comply with the new prices.
The attacks targeted a number of market vendors, in protest against merchants’ failure to reduce prices following a drop in foreign currency prices and a slight improvement in the Yemeni riyal.
Meanwhile, commodity prices are remaining unchanged despite ongoing appeals and demands from relevant authorities in Mocha to reduce prices since last week. This has sparked anger and resentment among the people of Tihama.
The violence acts from the failure of local authorities to fulfill their duties and the lack of basic services, particularly water, electricity, and health, since the factions have seized control of these areas in recent years, with residents of these areas continuing to face significant pressures due to deteriorating living conditions.
