HADRAMOUT, Aug. 03 (YPA) – The popular uprising in the oil-rich Hadramout province continued on Sunday for the eighth consecutive day, with residents sending angry messages to the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition in protest against corruption and the deteriorating living and service conditions.
Demands for Improved Conditions and an End to the Plundering of Resources
Participants in the uprising, which spread to various cities such as Mukalla, Ashihr, Tarim, and Sayoun, accused officials of plundering the province’s resources. They asserted that citizens were facing “catastrophic conditions” due to the lack of basic services, most notably power outages lasting more than 13 hours a day amid soaring temperatures.
Protesters demanded an end to corruption and an immediate improvement in living conditions and services.
Arrests and Casualties
The protests witnessed a campaign of arbitrary arrests of dozens of activists and participants in coastal and valley cities by factions affiliated with the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Anger also escalated after approximately 16 people were killed and wounded, including two in Tarim and Mukalla, over the past week.
Roadblocks and Demands for Change
To express their rejection of the government’s disregard for their demands, protesters blocked several major roads, including the international highway linking Yemen and the Sultanate of Oman. Despite the deteriorating situation and the continued power outage of more than 16 hours in some cities, the pro-coalition government has not offered any serious solutions or remedies to end the suffering of the people of Hadramout, further exacerbating popular unrest.
