DAMASCUS, Aug. 02 (YPA) – The Israeli occupation army is planning to establish a new military base at the site of the 78th Brigade, one of the sites of the disbanded Syrian army, in the Ras al-Nabaa area near the city of Qatana in the Damascus countryside.
This step is part of a series of Israeli incursions into Syrian territory, coinciding with ongoing negotiations in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, aimed at reaching understandings regarding the Israeli military presence in southern Syria.
According to local Syrian sources, a military convoy including senior Israeli army officers arrived at the site of the 78th Brigade to conduct a field survey and inspection of the area as part of preparations for the establishment of the new base.
These sources indicated that strengthening the Israeli military presence in the Ras al-Nabaa area could pave the way for the occupation of the strategically important city of Qatana, located only 10 kilometers from the capital, Damascus.
Qatna is a city of significant population and demographic importance, with a diverse mix of Druze, Alawites, Christians, and Muslims, and serves as a major transit point toward the villages and towns surrounding Damascus.
It also has a strategic military history, as it housed military bases for the 10th and 7th Divisions, along with the Republican Guard and the Palestine Liberation Army during the period of the former regime.
