In a blatant provocation: STC erases Shabwa’s identity by renaming ‘Shabwa General Hospital Authority’
SHABWA, March 13 (YPA) – In a provocative move that sparked widespread anger, Aidarous Qassem Al-Zubaidi, President of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), instructed the Governor of Shabwa, Awadh Al-Wazir, to rename Shabwa General Hospital, the most prominent medical facility in the governorate, to “Mohammed bin Zayed Hospital.”
This decision came after Al-Zubaidi’s arrival in Ataq, the capital of Shabwa, sparking strong condemnation from local residents, particularly since the UAE had not contributed to the construction of even a single stone of the hospital, which was established following the reunification of Yemen in 1995.
The decision to change the name of Shabwa General Hospital triggered an outpouring of anger among the people of the governorate, who questioned the reason for this systematic attempt to erase the name of Shabwa.
They criticized replacing the name “Shabwa,” which carries national and historical significance, with a foreign name unrelated to the governorate, its history, or identity.
A number of Shabwa activists and intellectuals described the decision as “provocative and unjustified,” emphasizing that it was an attempt to erase the name of Shabwa without reflecting any real achievement.
They pointed out that renaming the hospital was an effort to impose foreign agendas at the expense of Shabwa’s history and identity, and a clear insult to the hospital, which is the leading medical and service institution in the governorate.
