Saudi Arabia postpones Arab summit on Gaza reconstruction as US delegation arrives

RIYADH, Feb. 17 (YPA) – Saudi Arabia has postponed an Arab summit scheduled for this month to discuss an Egyptian plan to rebuild Gaza on Monday.

This coincides with the arrival of an American delegation to the region.

Media outlets reported, citing their sources, that Saudi Arabia asked Egypt to postpone the date of the Arab summit, indicating its preoccupation with the upcoming negotiations between Russia and the United States.

The Saudi request came after the arrival of the American delegation, amid anticipation of the visit of the new US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

Rubio began his first tour of the Middle East in Tel Aviv, where he confirmed Washington’s adherence to the Trump administration’s plan to displace the residents of Gaza, in an implicit reference to rejecting the Egyptian plan.

Egypt had intended to present its plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip to the Arab League ahead of an expected visit by US President Donald Trump.

Rubio’s tour is limited to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, reflecting a trend towards strengthening Arab division. This came as a continuation of the policies adopted by the Trump administration, including summoning the Jordanian king to obstruct the Egyptian plan that focuses on rebuilding Gaza while keeping its residents.

Meanwhile, Trump is currently trying to invest all his efforts to pass his plan on Gaza. He recently adopted a previous Emirati proposal to create a shipping corridor linking India and the United States via the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the occupied Palestinian territories. This plan includes the construction of a canal parallel to the Suez Canal, which was called the “Bin Gurion.”
