UN envoy: A return to full-scale military operations would be a mistake for Yemen and region

WORLD, Feb. 13 (YPA) – United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg, praised cessation of Yemeni Armed Forces’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, which were carried out in support of Gaza.

This comes during his briefing to the Security Council on Thursday.

He also commended the step of releasing Galaxy Leader crew, considering these actions as a foundation for further de-escalation.

Hans Grundberg noted that his office is in contact with all warring parties and continues to urge them to de-escalate.

Grundberg flagged the hardships across Yemen, including the struggle to afford basic commodities and prolonged blackouts sometimes for over 24 hours in coalition-held area. “Without the prospect of peace, there can be no prosperity.”

Regarding the upcoming US designation of Ansarullah (the Houthis) as a terrorist organization, Grundberg said they are awaiting further clarification, emphasizing the importance of protecting the efforts to advance the peace process.

“The elements of the roadmap provide a framework for a path forward, starting with a nationwide ceasefire. An end to hostilities can create the conditions for meaningful dialogue and a structured political process under UN auspices,” he told the Security Council in the briefing

Grundberg underscored the importance of maintaining space for effective mediation while addressing Yemen’s economic crisis through sustained dialogue and concrete measures to rebuild the country and prevent further hardship.

He warned that a return to full-scale military operations would be a grave mistake, emphasizing that the responsibility to create space for a negotiated solution lies with all stakeholders—Yemeni parties, regional actors, and the international community.

“A sustainable resolution to this conflict is still possible,” he concluded.
