HAHDRAMOUT, Aug. 08 (YPA) – Pro-Saudi forces in the First Military Region on Friday dispersed by force of arms a popular demonstration staged in the city of Tarim in Hadramout province, eastern Yemen.
These protests came in response to previous assaults on protesters who had blocked the international highway to demand improved service and living conditions and the release of detainees.
According to a local source, recruits of the First Military Region loyal to the Islah Party fired live ammunition and tear gas at the demonstrators and carried out a widespread arrest campaign.
The peaceful demonstration called for the dismissal of Governor Mabkhout bin Madhi, the end of the presence of pro-Islah party forces in the region, and the achievement of self-rule for the people of Hadramout.
For its part, the Hadramout Tribal Alliance strongly condemned the attack on the demonstrators, describing it as “blatant.” It vowed to respond in kind in defense of rights and self-determination, emphasizing that any attack on the demonstrators is an attack on the alliance as a whole.
