BEIJING, Feb. 06 (YPA) – The Chinese Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday that a Chinese naval ship thwarted a possible pirate attack on a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, south of Yemen.
This came in a statement posted on the official account of the Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China on the Chinese social networking site WeChat.
The statement said that on February 1, a Chinese naval ship escorting the merchant ship “Joyson” through the Gulf of Aden drove away two light boats that approached the ship, presumably carrying pirates.
It continued: “After a series of warnings and intimidation, the suspected pirate boats were successfully driven away.”
