Spanish government asks municipality of Jumilla to lift ban on Islamic celebrations

SANAA, Aug. 11 (YPA) – Spain’s left-wing coalition government has asked local authorities in the town of Jumilla, in the southern province of Murcia, to revoke the ban on Muslim prayers in public places during religious holidays.

The left-wing coalition government submitted a request to the Jumilla City Council to revoke the ban, passed by the Vox and People’s parties, which prohibits Eid prayers in public sports centers during religious holidays (Ramadan and Eid al-Adha), as it constitutes a violation of religious freedom.

The coalition government asserted that the decision taken in the Jumilla municipality “violates the Spanish Constitution” and must be revoked, and that the ban on Muslim holiday celebrations constitutes discrimination.

Government sources told the Spanish press that “a celebration that has been ongoing for years is being arbitrarily restricted by local and regional governments affiliated with the right and extreme right, which constitutes a violation of a fundamental right to freedom of religion in the Muslim community.”
