Sanaa, UN engage in constructive discussions on economic file

SANAA, Dec. 17 (YPA) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Sanaa, Jamal Amer, said on Tuesday that the correct beginning for addressing the economic file is to set agreed-upon parameters and standards for the work of the Joint Economic Committee.

This came during his meeting in Sanaa with Director of the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Ghannam, and Economic Advisor to the Office of the United Nations Envoy, Dirk Jan Omtzigt.

In the meeting, Amer listened to a briefing by the UN Envoy’s economic advisor on the outcomes of his meetings with Sanaa’s economic file officials.

The foreign minister clarified Sanaa’s readiness to sign the road map, as it serves as the gateway to Yemen’s political settlement process.

The foreign minister explained that Sanaa’s position is clear and does not tolerate any ambiguity regarding its immediate readiness to sign the road map, as it is the gateway to starting the political settlement process in Yemen.

Amer argued that the current freeze on the road map is due to American pressure on Sanaa to halt the support process for the Gaza Strip. He stressed that “This matter is rejected in its entirety, as there is no relationship between the peace file and the signing of the road map and the escalation file in the Red Sea, and that any pressure in this direction will be counterproductive.”

In turn, Al-Ghannam stated that the road map is the agreed-upon path for progressing the peace file in Yemen, while Omtzigt indicated that the discussion held in Sanaa was positive.
