EU discusses with Syrian armed factions issue of closing Russian bases

BRUSSELS, Dec. 17 (YPA) – The European Union High Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy, Kaya Kallas, announced that the Union would discuss the issue of closing Russian military bases in Syria with the country’s new authorities.

During a European Union ministerial meeting, Kaya Kallas mentioned that the closure of Russian bases in Syria was discussed, with some ministers stating the need to present the condition of ending Russian influence in dialogue with new Syrian authorities.

Russia has a long-standing air base at Hmeimim Airport in Latakia and a naval base in Tartus, used by Russian and Soviet ships since the year 1971.
