UNHCHR calls for action against Israeli occupation’s disregard for international law
GENEVA, Sept. 10 (YPA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said on Monday that ending the war that has been ongoing for nearly a year in the Gaza Strip is a priority.
He asked countries to take action regarding what he described as “flagrant disregard” by the Israeli occupation for international law in the occupied Palestinian territories, according to what Reuters reported.
Türk urged governments around the world to take more action to protect human rights. He said governments should not be allowed to avoid criticism or hide violations by referring to national sovereignty.
At the opening of the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Türk stressed that “states must not and cannot accept blatant disregard for international law.”
He said that the world is currently showing acceptance of “crossing many red lines or preparing to go directly to that.”
Türk warned against accepting what has become considered a “normal situation” in the world, stressing that “it cannot be a violent military escalation without end, with methods of war, control, and oppression becoming increasingly horrific and technologically advanced.”
He also warned against “the indiscriminate broadcast of media misinformation that conceals the facts and hinders the ability to make free and informed choices.”
