Senior Palestinian official confirms failure of Doha negotiations

GAZA, Aug. 30 (YPA) – A senior official in the Palestinian resistance confirmed on Friday the failure of the Doha negotiations regarding reaching a ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange.

Al-Mayadeen channel quoted the official as saying that “the negotiations are heading towards collapse due to “Israel’s refusal to respond to the mediators’ proposals to address the outstanding issues.”

The official revealed that the Doha meetings had failed to dissuade the Israeli occupation from its insistence on remaining in the Philadelphi Corridor, and to remove the veto on 65 detainees sentenced to life imprisonment.

It also conveyed Hamas’s confirmation that the negotiations in the current manner would not lead to an agreement, noting that the mediators “feel very frustrated with the stubborn Israeli positions, and see them as the only obstacle in the negotiations.”

The official also quoted the mediators as saying that the US administration “is not exerting sufficient pressure on the occupation, despite knowing that its positions on the pending issues be unjustified.”

This comes after the political-security cabinet approved by a majority of 8 in favor on the approval of maps that specify the continued presence of the occupation army in the “Philadelphi Corridor,” as part of a possible prisoner exchange deal.
