GENEVA, Aug. 05 (YPA) – United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk called on Monday for urgent action to stop the escalation in the Middle East, in light of fears of the expansion of the Gaza war.
“I am deeply concerned about the growing risk of a broader conflict erupting in the Middle East,” Turk said in a statement, calling on all parties, along with influential countries, to act urgently to calm the situation, “which has become very dangerous.”
Turk reminded the parties that human rights and the protection of civilians must be top priorities, emphasizing that civilians, most of whom are women and children, have already suffered “unbearable pain and suffering” as a result of bombs and weapons over the past ten months.
“Everything, and I mean everything, must be done to avoid this situation sliding into an abyss that will only lead to more horrific consequences for civilians,” the UN Human Rights Commissioner said.
