UN envoy to Yemen provides new briefing to UN Security Council

SANAA, April 15 (YPA) – UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has stressed the urgent need for regional de-escalation and a nationwide ceasefire in Yemen.

This came in Grundberg’s briefing to the UN Security Council, in which he reiterated the UN Secretary-General’s concerns about the risk of escalation in the region, urging the need to make efforts to strengthen peaceful and stable relations in the region.

He affirmed that this necessity had been clear for a long time in Yemen.
In his briefing, Grundberg highlighted the missed opportunities for progress in Yemen, and while previous years witnessed moments of hope and building confidence between the Yemeni parties, this year witnessed setbacks.

The UN envoy confirmed the urgent need for a nationwide ceasefire, improvement of living conditions, and the resumption of an inclusive political process in which everyone participates.

Despite the Yemeni parties’ commitments to UN-sponsored peace, the momentum for progress has faltered due to regional events that have complicated mediation efforts.

He warned against leaving the political process in Yemen on hold, calling for dialogue and cooperation under the auspices of the United Nations to avoid catastrophic consequences.

Grundberg concluded his speech by stressing the need to stop the escalation, focusing on long-term goals and urging continued support from the Security Council and the international community.
