UN Security Council to vote on draft resolution to stop war on Gaza

WORLD, Feb. 20 (YPA) – The UN Security Council is to vote on Tuesday on a draft resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, submitted by Algeria on behalf of the Arab Group.

Algeria initially distributed the draft at the end of last month, but some permanent members demanded that the resolution be negotiated, while the United States threatened to use its veto power and distributed an alternative draft for a vote in the coming days.

The Algerian draft calls for an end to the war on Gaza and for the parties to the conflict to comply with their obligations under international law and to protect civilians and civilian objects.

The US draft calls for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as practicable and stresses “the urgent need for a plan to ensure the protection of civilians and avoid their displacement in the event of a major military offensive in Rafah.

Any proposal must be approved in the Security Council with at least nine votes and no veto power by the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China.
