New popular uprising in Hadramout to demand improving conditions

HADRAMOUT, Jan. 04 (YPA) – Popular and tribal calls have escalated in Hadramout province, eastern Yemen, to come out with a new outburst to demand improving conditions and reducing the prices of oil derivatives, similar to what happened in Ma’rib Governorate during the past few days.

Local sources in Sayoun city said that youth and tribal leaders have actually begun to take to the streets in order to express their rejection of the deteriorating living situation experienced by the province, which is rich in oil and wealth.

According to the sources, the first protest marches would take place today, Thursday, with the participation of various civil, social, and tribal segments to demand improved services and a reduction in the prices of fuel, similar to the neighboring Marib province, which witnessed a tribal uprising in rejection of the price increase imposed on fuel.

For its part, the command of the “First Military Region” announced an increase in its readiness to face the challenges, in reference to the youth and tribal uprising, and said that “the region’s forces will firmly confront all suspicious movements that want to sow discord and destabilize stability.”

Military sources indicated that directives were issued by the command of the First Military Region to strengthen its military sites in the various districts of the province and to send more military vehicles and soldiers to the streets and checkpoints to thwart any tribal and popular movements.

Calls began in Hadramout and Shabwa provinces to escalate to form tribal sit-ins near the oil production fields to prevent any export or tanker exit from those sites until fuel prices were reduced.

A gallon of benzene with a capacity of 20 liters is sold for about 24,000 Yemeni riyals in Hadramout, about 7 times what is sold in the neighboring Marib province.
