Emir of Kuwait appoints Prime Minister

KUWAIT, Jan. 04 (YPA) – The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, on Thursday appointed Sheikh Dr. Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah as Prime Minister and was tasked with nominating members of the new cabinet, Kuwait News Agency “KUNA” reported.

This comes about two weeks after the new Emir Sheikh Mishal assumed the reins of power following the death of his half-brother, Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, at the age of 86.

Sheikh Mohammed, 68, is the fourth son of the twelfth Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, who held power from 1965 until his death in 1977. He is a veteran diplomat who holds a doctorate in economics and Middle Eastern studies from Harvard University.

He assumed the position of his country’s ambassador to the United States in 1993 and remained in it for a decade. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2003 and resigned in 2011 in the midst of a political crisis. His resignation was then considered an objection to the government’s failure to implement actual reforms in the face of suspicions of corruption.
