GAZA, Jan, 01 (YPA) – Over 1,000 children in Gaza have had one or both legs amputated since the Israeli enemy’s aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip began on 7 October, Spokesman for the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), James Elder, said in a statement.
International relief workers visiting the Strip conveyed the human tragedy experienced by more than 2.3 million Palestinians, in light of the inability to meet basic needs for survival.
Regarding the exacerbation of the health crisis as a result of the Israeli siege and the severe shortage of medical supplies, UNICEF explained that doctors in Gaza being forced to amputate limbs not only without anesthetics, but also through quick operations outside health facilities, and without palliative medications as well.
“Even if children recover from amputation, they do not escape the hell of the threat of death due to Israeli bombing, ” a UNICEF official added.
The World Health Organization’s spokeswoman Dr. Margaret Harris, stated that WHO employees in Gaza cannot move between emergency departments in the Strip’s hospitals “for fear of stepping on people,” referring to the overcrowding of medical centers with the wounded, patients, and displaced people from the aggression.
Harris described the situation inside hospitals as “unreasonable,” and “it is unbelievable that the world allows this suffering to continue,” stressing that the sick and wounded people are suffering from severe pain and asking for food and water.
