Algeria seeks to strip “Zionist entity” of observer status in African Union

ALGERIA, Feb. 15 (YPA) – Algeria seeks to strip the “Zionist entity” of its observer status in the African Union.

The Algerian newspaper Al-Shorouk revealed that the issue of withdrawing the decision to grant the “Zionist entity” observer member of the African Union will be on the agenda of the regular African summit, which will be held at the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on February 18 and 19.
The newspaper reported that the visit of Algerian Foreign Minister, Ramtane Lamamra, to South Africa is part of the preparation for this summit.

In July 2021, the entity was officially granted the status of an observer member of the African Union, after the Israeli ambassador to Ethiopia, Aleligne Admasu, presented his credentials as an “African Union observer” to the head of the Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, at the organization’s headquarters in Addis Ababa.

This the decision was criticized by embassies of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, State of Kuwait, State of Qatar, the State of Palestine and Republic of Yemen, and the mission of the League of Arab States with the African Arab embassies.

At the beginning of last August, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Mauritania, in addition to Republic of the Comoros, officially objected to the acceptance by the Chairman of the African Union Commission of the credentials of the “Zionist entity” as an observer member of the Union.
