NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (YPA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has expressed concern over the killing of Palestinian children in recent days, and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
Last week, 19 Palestinian children were killed, bringing the number of child casualties to 37 since the beginning of the year, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Between August 5 and August 7, 17 of Palestinian children were killed during the Israeli enemy’s bombing of Gaza, while two of them were killed on August 9 during military operations in the West Bank.
“The large number of children killed or injured this year is unacceptable,” Bachelet said.
On August 5, the Israeli enemy army launched an operation in the Gaza Strip, during which many innocent civilians, including children and women, were killed along with prominent military leaders belonging to the Jihad movement in Gaza, in addition to a number of the movement’s fighters.
Bachelet’s office was able to verify that among the 48 Palestinian fatalities, at least 22 civilians, including 17 children and four women.
Among 360 Palestinians reported injured, about two-thirds are civilians, including 151 children, 58 women and 19 elderly people.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed that several raids by the Israeli enemy hit property that appears to be civilian.
“Attacks like this must stop,” Bachelet said, calling for prompt, independent, impartial, thorough and transparent investigations to be carried out into all these incidents.
She added, “The lack of accountability continues to be almost complete, both with regard to violations of international humanitarian law committed by the Israeli forces and the hostilities in Gaza.”
