Spain deploys 3,000 soldiers and security personnel in Ceuta to counter wave of migration

MADRID, Aug. 02 (YPA) – Spanish authorities announced on Sunday the deployment of more than 3,000 soldiers and security personnel in the autonomous city of Ceuta, against the backdrop of an escalating migration crisis.

A spokesperson for the government representation in Ceuta told Sputnik that the number of police and Civil Guard officers had increased from 696 to 1,042, along with about 2,000 military personnel, to reinforce security in the city.

He added that in the coming days, additional reinforcements from the Civil Guard’s maritime service units would be sent to intensify monitoring of the coasts and maritime borders.

A 500-meter-long floating barrier was erected on Saturday on the maritime border between Ceuta and Morocco with the aim of curbing migrants’ attempts to enter.
