WORLD, Jul. 31 (YPA) – British foreign secretary Liz Truss, said she would not hold a second independence referendum if she became PM.
Also this week, the other candidate for prime minister, Rishi Sonak, declared that the current time was the “worst time” for the referendum.
She said : “The Scottish Nationalists have agreed that their referendum is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and I will insist on that.” I will work hard to strengthen our entire union. As Prime Minister, I will do what is necessary and right to protect our Union, as I have done with the Northern Ireland Protocol. I am sure that there will be no second referendum on Scottish independence in my time.”
Earlier, Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a date for an independence referendum and that the vote would take place on 19 October 2023.
The Scottish First Minister said she was “prepared and willing” to negotiate with the British Government on the terms of the referendum, noting that the vote should be “legal” and that this was non-negotiable.
Speaking to Parliament, she said the government had a “clear mandate” to hold another vote – after rejecting independence in an earlier referendum in 2014, adding: “What I am not prepared to do, and what I will never do, is allow Scottish democracy to be held captive by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson or any other Prime Minister.”
