US expert: It was a mistake for Pelosi to make her plans public about Taiwan visit

WORLD, Jul. 31 (YPA) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a mistake of disclosing in advance the possibility of a visit to Taiwan, said Matthew Kronig, a professor at Georgetown University in Washington.

In an article in Foreign Policy, Kronig agreed that what revolves around Pelosi’s possible trip to Taiwan is an “unnecessary crisis,” but added, “Congress is not the one to blame. It is China’s responsibility. The Chinese Communist Party does not decide where Americans can travel.”

“It was a mistake for Pelosi to make her plans public,” the expert said. It should have suddenly appeared (in Taiwan), as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson did on her surprise visit to Kiev.”

Kronig noted that Pelosi and the administration of US President Joe Biden cannot back down, because that would mean succumbing to Beijing’s will.

“This will be a sign of weakness and will essentially signal to the Chinese Communist Party that it has a veto over the travel schedules of US officials,” he said.
